As you may already know, I live in Belgium in a university town and bikes are very popular around here. I have my own -thanks to Tine- and it comes very handy when I go shopping around town. February is too cold to bike -at least for me- so Im not using it as often as Id like to. Spring is coming so bike season begins for me again! I cant wait/ Como ustedes ya saben, yo vivo en Bélgica en una ciudad universitaria y las bicicletas son muy populares por aquí. Tengo la mía -gracias a Tine-y viene muy bien cuando voy de compras por la ciudad. Febrero es demasiado frío para andar en bicicleta, por lo menos para mí, así que no la estoy usando tan a menudo como me gustaría. La primavera está llegando así que la temporada de bicicletas comienza para mí otra vez! No puedo esperar.

While browsing for pictures I came across Steve Rea´s blog called Rides a Bike and realized that he published a coffee table book called Hollywood Rides a Bike./ The book is a collection of 125 vintage photographs of celebrities and their bikes. I ran into this video from the 50s called Assignment: Venezuela. It was sponsored by the Creole Petroleum Company as an attempt to attract Americans to go to work and live in Venezuela. Putting aside the impecable aesthetics of the video (50s at its best!) it portrays a developing country in which foreigners feel welcomed because people would make sure they did, with an evolving economy and perfect weather. Americans were not afraid of feeling like outsiders since they had access to all the American products and comfort/ Me encontré con este video de los años 50 llamado Asignación: Venezuela. Fue patrocinado por la Compañía Creole Petroleum como un intento de atraer a los estadounidenses a ir a trabajar y vivir en Venezuela. Dejando a un lado la estética impecable del video (50 en su mejor momento!) que retrata a un país en desarrollo en el que los extranjeros se sienten acogidos, porque la gente se aseguraba de que lo hicieran, con una economía en evolución y un clima perfecto. Los estadounidenses no tenían miedo de sentirse como extraños, ya que tenía acceso a todos los productos estadounidenses y su confort.
It´s really cool to see actual footage from the era and trying to spot the buildings that still survive in the cities. Caracas and Maracaibo were examples of the development of the country in matters of infraestructure and technology. The video makes you believe that progress was an unstoppable force during those days. However, it is to be noted that Marcos Pérez Jiménez was the President back then. It means that progress (public works and development of industries) happened on the expense of repression and the supression of the opposition, Pérez Jiménez was a dictator which means things were not as simple as they are portrayed on the video. If you are interested in the 50s or Venezuelan history it is worth seeing.../Es realmente genial ver imágenes reales de la época y tratar de detectar los edificios que aún sobreviven en las ciudades. Caracas y Maracaibo fueron ejemplos del desarrollo del país en materia de infraestructura y tecnología. El vídeo te hace creer que el progreso era una fuerza imparable en esos días. Sin embargo, es de señalar que Marcos Pérez Jiménez era el presidente en ese entonces. Esto significa que el progreso (obras públicas y el desarrollo de las industrias) sucedió a costa de represión y la supresión de la oposición, Pérez Jiménez fue un dictador, lo que quiere decir que las cosas no eran tan simples como son presentados en el video. While I was writing this post, the President of Venezuela,Hugo Chávez died after being diagnosed with cancer in 2011 and undergoing a series of treatments in Cuba. I don´t vote, I acknowledge he did many things for the country and its people but on the other hand, I resent many of his actions. So I´m in between. It really gets me to see people attacking each other and it is a reality that he left behind a devided country. I guess he died and I still dont know what to think about him. He will always be a mistery to me but I have to admit that the world will be a less interesting place without him. He fought for the unification of Latinamerica, stood up against the bigest names in politics but at times his actions seemed ridiculous and went against any rational thinking. A character like him is not born every decade and even though our country is far from being that americanized tropical paradise shown in the video, he left behind a country in which people are more politically involved than ever and every person has a saying. The elections will be held in a month and after having the same president since 1998 it is definetely time for a change, a new head of state/Mientras estaba escribiendo este post, el presidente de Venezuela, Hugo Chávez, murió después de ser diagnosticado con cáncer en 2011 y de ser sometido a una serie de tratamientos en Cuba. Yo no voto pero reconozco que hizo muchas cosas por el país y su gente, pero por otro lado, me ofenden muchas de sus acciones. Así que estoy en el medio. Lo que realmente me llega es ver a la gente atacándose y es una realidad que dejó tras de sí un país dividido. Supongo que él murió y yo todavía no sé qué pensar de él. Siempre será un misterio para mí, pero tengo que admitir que el mundo será un lugar menos interesante sin él. Él luchó por la unificación de Latinoamérica, se levantó contra los más grandes nombres en la política, pero a veces sus acciones parecían ridículas y fue en contra de cualquier pensamiento racional. Un personaje como él no nace cada década y aunque nuestro país está lejos de ser ese paraíso tropical americanizado que se muestra en el video, dejó atrás un país en el que la gente está más involucrada que nunca políticamente y cada persona tiene una opinión. Las elecciones se llevarán a cabo en un mes y después de tener el mismo presidente desde 1998 es definitivamente hora de un cambio, un nuevo jefe de Estado.
